Important Facts

Did you know that a child with special needs could be born into a family at any time? Unfortunately, seven in every one hundred children are born with some degree of disability. This can be a very overwhelming time for parents.

When a child is registered in Providence, our Therapists and Teachers meet with the family to develop an Independent Program Plan (IPP) for each child. Specific goals are developed and throughout the year our staff meet with the family to review each child's progress and to determine if the child has achieved or is achieving their respective goals. The information gathered at these meetings is included in the child's IPP file and changes to goals will be implemented following discussion with parents, where necessary.

At our Centre, each child receives specialized educational and therapeutic interventions from our staff, which include, teachers, nurses, speech and language pathologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, a music therapist and psychologists. We also provide Outreach educational and therapeutic consultation services to children who are enrolled in various child care centres or day homes throughout Calgary.

We know what works, and children with special needs develop better when integrated with typically developing children. We also believe that early intervention in a child's life can have a dramatic impact on their future. Statistics show that for every dollar spent on a child with special needs, $7.00 per child will be saved in the future in the areas of health, education, social services and justice. Working with children at an early age enables us to prepare them for their next step in life.
